Prevent and Reduce Waste

  • Print everything double-sided
  • Place registration materials on-line

Conserve Energy and Reduce Traffic

  • Seek naturally lighted meeting and exhibit spaces
  • Publicize mass transportation options
  • Provide shuttle service from mass transit stops or hotels to the event site

Work with Contract Food Service and Lodging Contractors

  • Plan food service needs carefully to avoid unnecessary waste
  • Hold a waste-free luncheon with reusable mugs, Frisbees for plates and cloth napkins
  • Donate excess food to charitable organizations or to local pig farmers
  • Request that contractor eliminate disposables for the entire event

Practice Environmental Buying

  • Recommend purchases from consignment stores, garage sales and antique stores
  • Sell or provide refillable containers for beverages
  • Provide reusable containers for handouts or samples (pocket or file folders, cloth bags)
  • Where reusable items are not feasible, select products that are both recycled and recyclable

Educate Participants

  • Ask participants to return name badges so the holder may be reused
  • Request that unused items be collected for use at another event
  • Reward participation by communicating environmental savings achieved
