Below is a list of a few ideas on recycling
It usually takes less energy to make recycled products; recycled aluminum, for example, takes 95 percent less energy than new aluminum from bauxite ore. Using recycled materials not only cuts down on the energy used in the manufacturing process, it dramatically reduces emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants. For example, recycling one ton of glass results in energy savings of more than 300% and lowers carbon dioxide emissions by 3.46 tons.
Prevent and Reduce Waste
- Print everything double-sided
- Place registration materials on-line
Conserve Energy and Reduce Traffic
- Seek naturally lighted meeting and exhibit spaces
- Publicize mass transportation options
- Provide shuttle service from mass transit stops or hotels to the event site
Work with Contract Food Service and Lodging Contractors
- Plan food service needs carefully to avoid unnecessary waste
- Hold a waste-free luncheon with reusable mugs, Frisbees for plates and cloth napkins
- Donate excess food to charitable organizations or to local pig farmers
- Request that contractor eliminate disposables for the entire event
Practice Environmental Buying
- Recommend purchases from consignment stores, garage sales and antique stores
- Sell or provide refillable containers for beverages
- Provide reusable containers for handouts or samples (pocket or file folders, cloth bags)
- Where reusable items are not feasible, select products that are both recycled and recyclable
Educate Participants
- Ask participants to return name badges so the holder may be reused
- Request that unused items be collected for use at another event
- Reward participation by communicating environmental savings achieved
